The first photo taken from space by a man in Earth’s orbit. Photo by Major Gherman Stepanovich Titov aboard Vostok II on August 6-7, 1961. Titov, the second man to orbit the earth was the first man to take a picture and film from space. Gagarin did not take a camera with him on the first spaceflight, so Titov was the first photographer and first cinematographer of the cosmos.

Cassini Presents Saturn Moon Quintet

With the artistry of a magazine cover shoot, NASA’s Cassini spacecraft captured this portrait of five of Saturn’s moons poised along the planet’s rings.
From left to right are Janus, Pandora, Enceladus, Mimas and finally Rhea, bisected by the right side of the frame. The view was acquired at a distance of approximately 684,000 miles (1.1 million kilometers) from Rhea and 1.1 million miles (1.8 million kilometers) from Enceladus.
The image was taken in visible green light with the Cassini spacecraft narrow-angle camera on July 29, 2011. Image scale is about 4 miles (7 kilometers) per pixel on Rhea and 7 miles (11 kilometers) per pixel on Enceladus.

Damn, Cassini, you’re doing fine work.

Russian Space Shuttle Repaint Fail

The Buran was the Russian equivalent to the US Space Shuttle, with only one unmanned flight into space to brag about before the program was cancelled due to the dissolution of the Soviet Union. While being stored in the Baikonur Cosmodrome, a hangar collapse destroyed the remains in 2002. Trotted out during the recent MAKS 2011 Airshow to display its “restoration”, intrepid photographers discovered that the restoration had merely consisted of laborers painting one side… the side facing the air show crowds. Repaints: they work in vidya gaems, why cant they work for Mother Russia? See the full set of pics including interior shots at englishrussia.
